Reading the XRP price
XRP trades for $1.30 per coin as of the latest update. Next to a bitcoin, that unit looks tiny, and the reason is arithmetic rather than a verdict on either project: far more XRP exist than there will ever be bitcoin.
So a low price per XRP doesn’t make the asset small. Multiply the price by the coins in circulation and you get its total market value, which places XRP at number 5 among cryptocurrencies. That total is the fairer comparison when you scan our coin list.
A ledger designed for payments
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain launched in 2012. Its developers set out to move value faster and more cheaply than Bitcoin could, with transactions settling in a few seconds.
There is no mining. A set of independent validators agrees on which transactions are valid and in what order. XRP pays the small fee each transaction requires, and it can act as a go-between when one currency is exchanged for another across borders. The ledger also has a built-in exchange where people can trade XRP against tokens issued on the network.
Who is behind it
The ledger was written by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto. Shortly after launch, its creators handed a large share of the XRP to a new company, first called OpenCoin and now known as Ripple, which builds payment products that use the ledger.
XRP and Ripple often get used as if they were one name, but they are different things. One is a digital asset on a public ledger; the other is a company. Anyone can send XRP without dealing with Ripple at all.
100 billion, all at once
Every XRP that will ever exist was created when the ledger started: 100 billion units in one go. The amount actually circulating, currently 63.13B XRP, is lower because part of the total has been held back, much of it locked in escrow accounts that release coins on a schedule.
The overall number can only fall. Each transaction destroys the tiny fee paid for it, so XRP slowly disappears from existence over time. One XRP divides into a million drops, the smallest amount the ledger records, which is handy if you only want to send a few cents’ worth. Every account must also keep a small reserve of XRP that it can’t spend, a rule that helps keep spam off the ledger.
