What is a satoshi?
A satoshi, or sat, is the smallest amount of bitcoin the network records. It is one hundred-millionth of a coin: 0.00000001 BTC. Every bitcoin balance, however large, is stored as a whole number of sats, and a wallet simply shows it with a decimal point.
That makes the conversion fixed. 1 BTC to satoshi is always 100,000,000 sats. Only the dollar value of a sat changes, because it follows the bitcoin price.
How much is 1 satoshi in USD?
Take the price of one bitcoin, $82,229.00, and divide it by 100 million. The result, $0.0008223, is the value of one sat at the last update. It is a tiny number, which is why people usually turn the question around and ask how many sats one dollar buys. Right now the answer is about 1,216 sats.
Thinking in sats makes small amounts easier to picture. A balance of a few thousand sats is simpler to read than one written in ten-thousandths of a bitcoin.
The link between the two numbers always runs both ways. If the bitcoin price doubles, each sat is worth twice as much and a dollar buys half as many sats. If the price halves, a dollar stretches to twice as many.
How many satoshis will there ever be?
Bitcoin is capped at 21 million coins, so the most sats that can ever exist is 2,100,000,000,000,000, or 2.1 quadrillion. New sats are still being created with every block; the amount already mined is tracked on how many bitcoin are left.
Why is it called a satoshi?
The unit is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, who published the original design and mined the first block on 3 January 2009. Who is behind the name has never been publicly confirmed. The smallest unit carries the name as a tribute to the person, or people, who started it all.
Why do people count in sats?
Counting in sats removes the long strings of zeros. “25,000 sats” is clearer than “0.00025 BTC”, and it is harder to slip a decimal place. Some wallets offer sats as a display option for exactly that reason.
It also changes how small amounts feel. Someone who will never hold a whole bitcoin can still own a round number of sats. The Bitcoin calculator shows what any amount is worth, and pages such as Bitcoin in naira and Bitcoin in rands show how many sats a unit of local money buys.
