Daily average prices across major exchanges, from Blockchain.com. Highs and lows are daily averages, so a single trade may have gone higher or lower. Bitcoin had no market price before 18 August 2010 in this data set. Last updated 6 October 2026.

How much was bitcoin when it first came out?

When the network started with its first block on 3 January 2009, a bitcoin had no price at all. There was no exchange, no buyer and no seller, only a handful of people running the software and earning new coins from it.

The first published exchange rate came on 5 October 2009, from a site called New Liberty Standard. It valued one US dollar at about 1,309 BTC, which works out to less than a tenth of a cent per coin. That rate was not set by trading: it was calculated from the cost of the electricity a computer used to produce coins.

How much was bitcoin in 2010?

2010 is the year bitcoin got a market. The first exchange where people traded with each other opened in March 2010, and from then on prices came from real trades rather than formulas. The yearly figures in the table above come from Blockchain.com’s market price data.

The best-known trade of that year happened on 22 May 2010, now called Bitcoin Pizza Day, when an early user paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. At today’s $82,241.00 per coin, multiply by 10,000 to see what that order would be worth now. A bitcoin stayed below one US dollar for all of 2010 and first reached a dollar in February 2011.

Halvings: the dates that shaped the supply

Every 210,000 blocks, roughly four years, the number of new bitcoin created per block is cut in half. The halvings so far came in November 2012, July 2016, May 2020 and April 2024, taking the reward from 50 BTC to 25, then 12.5, 6.25 and now 3.125 BTC per block.

Halvings make useful landmarks on a long chart, and people often talk about the price swings in the years around them. The schedule is fixed in Bitcoin’s code; how the market reacts to it is not. The countdown to the next one is on how many bitcoin are left.

Reading the table and the long chart

For each year the table gives three numbers: the price on 1 January, the highest price during the year and the lowest. The gap between a year’s high and low is often wider than the change from one January to the next, which shows how far bitcoin can travel inside a single year.

Past prices describe what happened. They don’t predict what comes next, and nothing on this page should be read as a forecast. For today’s value in other money, see Bitcoin in Indian rupees or Bitcoin in Canadian dollars.
