What TRON is mainly used for
TRON is a blockchain that runs smart contracts and hosts tokens, and in practice it has become one of the main routes for sending dollar-pegged stablecoins between wallets. Low, predictable costs are a large part of that appeal.
TRX is the network’s own coin. It pays for activity on the chain, it can be staked to earn the resources that transactions consume, and it gives holders votes in choosing who runs the network. TRON addresses begin with a capital T, which makes them easy to tell apart from addresses on other chains.
Started by Justin Sun in 2017
Justin Sun founded TRON in 2017 and raised money for it through a coin sale that year. TRX started out as a token on Ethereum. In 2018 TRON launched its own main network, and the tokens were moved across to it. That same year TRON bought BitTorrent, the company behind the well-known file-sharing software.
The chain uses delegated proof of stake. TRX holders vote for 27 Super Representatives, who take turns producing a block roughly every three seconds. Votes are recounted every six hours, so the list of block producers can change several times a day, and the voting weight that staked TRX carries is called TRON Power.
Bandwidth and energy instead of plain fees
TRON charges for activity in two resources. Bandwidth covers ordinary transfers, and every account receives a small free allowance each day. Energy covers smart contract calls, such as sending a stablecoin. Staking TRX earns you both; if you don’t have enough, the network burns TRX from your balance to cover the shortfall.
That burning is why TRX supply isn’t fixed. Fresh coins go to block producers and the people who vote for them, fees destroy coins, and the total, now 95B TRX, can drift in either direction from month to month.
Making sense of the TRX price
One TRX sells for $0.335. That modest figure follows from the size of the supply, which is counted in the tens of billions. The smallest unit, the sun, is a millionth of a TRX.
To compare TRON with other networks, look at market cap rather than unit price: multiply the price by every TRX in circulation. Our coin rankings do that sum live and currently place TRON at 8. If you’d like to see how prices are gathered and averaged, read how our prices work.
