Rand, rands, ZAR: the number above

Officially the currency is the South African rand, code ZAR, and in everyday speech people say “rands”. Whatever you call it, the figure at the top is what a whole bitcoin costs in that currency, updated live.

A whole coin is a large sum, and that can put people off. It needn’t: Bitcoin is sold in pieces, and the price of one coin is simply the reference point for working out what your rands buy.

The rand figure updates as trades come in, with no closing time and no weekend pause. The 24-hour range under the price gives the lowest and highest rand price since this time yesterday, a useful check before you quote a number to anyone.

How much is 0.01 bitcoin in rands?

Divide the live price by 100. For 0.1 BTC divide by 10, and for 0.001 BTC divide by 1,000. The conversion table does all three, along with half a coin.

Starting from rands instead, each R1 gets you about 73 sats. The other table shows R100, R500, R1,000 and R10,000 in BTC and in sats, the unit that makes small balances readable. Our satoshi explainer has more on it. The higher the rand price of a coin climbs, the fewer sats each rand buys.

Reading the rand price next to the dollar price

Most Bitcoin headlines are written in US dollars. To compare, divide the rand price on this page by the dollar price on the home page. The answer is the rand-dollar exchange rate used for the conversion, give or take rounding.

That also shows why a day’s percentage change can differ between the two. If the rand weakens, the rand price climbs a little more than the dollar price; if the rand firms, it climbs a little less. The record rand price, R2,198,146.00 on 13 July 2025, carries both effects.

Why another site may show a slightly different rand price

Price sites draw on different trades, refresh at different moments and convert to rand at their own rates. Small differences between them are expected and don’t mean either one is wrong. See how prices work for this site’s sources, or the Bitcoin calculator for amounts not listed above.

When you compare, check whether the other site rounds to whole rands or shows a quote from a few minutes earlier. Either one can explain the whole gap on its own.
