What 1 BTC to CAD is telling you

The big number above is the price of one complete bitcoin, quoted in Canadian dollars. It is not a share price and it is not a minimum purchase. Most people who own Bitcoin hold a small piece of a coin, and the converter on this page works with any amount down to the eighth decimal place.

In words, that is about $119 thousand. Before you compare it with a figure a friend mentioned last month, glance at the 1-year chart: a few weeks can make a large difference.

Two things move the Canadian price

Bitcoin trades mostly against the US dollar, so the Canadian figure is built in two steps. First comes the US-dollar price of a coin. That is then multiplied by the number of Canadian dollars one US dollar costs. A change in either step changes the result.

Here is the arithmetic. Suppose Bitcoin sits perfectly still in US dollars for a day, but the loonie slips by 1% against the greenback. The CAD price of a coin then rises by roughly 1%, even though nothing happened to Bitcoin. The reverse also holds: a firmer loonie can soften a Bitcoin rally when you measure it at home.

Why US headlines don’t match your screen

Plenty of news stories, posts and charts seen in Canada quote Bitcoin in US dollars without saying so. If a headline number looks lower than the one here, check the currency before anything else. A US quote and a Canadian quote taken at the same moment will rarely match, and the gap between them is simply the exchange rate.

Our home page carries the US-dollar figure if you want both side by side, and the Bitcoin calculator converts between them.

Buying a slice with Canadian dollars

One bitcoin splits into 100 million satoshis, so small amounts can be priced precisely. At the moment a single Canadian dollar gets you about 841 sats. A $20 purchase is twenty times that, and $100 is a hundred times.

The table further up spells out $20, $100, $500 and $1,000 in BTC and sats, so there is no mental math to do. The satoshi guide explains the unit itself.

Small gaps between price sites

Open three Bitcoin sites and you may see three Canadian prices a few dollars apart. Each one picks its own trade data, its own USD/CAD rate and its own refresh timing. Those differences are normal and tiny next to the price itself. Our notes on how prices work show where this page gets its figure.

Questions people ask

How much is 1 bitcoin in Canadian dollars?

Right now one bitcoin is worth $118,900.00. The figure updates live and covers a whole coin, not the smallest amount you can hold.

Why does the bitcoin price in CAD change when the US price is flat?

The Canadian figure also depends on the USD/CAD exchange rate. A weaker loonie lifts the CAD price and a stronger one pulls it down.

How much is 1 satoshi worth in CAD?

Take the CAD price and divide by 100,000,000. That comes to a fraction of a cent, which is why it is easier to say one dollar buys about 841 sats.

Do I have to buy a whole bitcoin?

No. Bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places, and most holdings are a small part of one coin.
