How many bitcoins are there?

The Bitcoin blockchain is at block 971,833. Every block so far has created a set number of new coins, so adding them up gives the total in existence: 20.10 million BTC, or 95.7% of the final supply. The hard limit of 21 million has been part of the software since the first block on 3 January 2009.

That leaves 0.90 million BTC still to be mined. Because the reward keeps shrinking, that last slice will take more than a century to arrive.

How many bitcoins are mined a day?

A new block is added about every 10 minutes, which makes roughly 144 blocks a day. Since April 2024 each block creates 3.125 new BTC, known as the block subsidy, so about 450 new bitcoin appear on an average day. Some days come in a little higher or lower, because blocks don’t arrive on an exact timer.

Miners also collect the transaction fees in each block, but fees only move existing coins from one person to another. They don’t add to the supply.

When will bitcoin halve again?

The subsidy is cut in half every 210,000 blocks. It started at 50 BTC per block and fell to 25 in November 2012, 12.5 in July 2016, 6.25 in May 2020 and 3.125 in April 2024. The next cut, to 1.5625 BTC at block 1,050,000, is 78,167 blocks away: around April 2028 at the current pace.

The date is an estimate, since block times wander from day to day. The block number is exact.

When will bitcoin be fully mined?

Around the year 2140. Each halving makes the reward smaller, so the final coins trickle out more and more slowly, until the subsidy falls below one satoshi and stops. After that, miners would be paid by transaction fees alone.

The total will end up just under 21 million rather than exactly 21 million, because the reward schedule rounds down to whole satoshis.

Lost coins and the real supply

Not every mined bitcoin can still be spent. Coins held at an address whose private key has been lost stay on the blockchain forever, and nobody can move them. There is no way to count these exactly, since an untouched wallet may be lost or simply waiting, so we don’t subtract any estimate from the figures above. The satoshi page explains the unit these totals are counted in, and Bitcoin price history places each halving on the price timeline.
